What is the Shopify vape ban?
It was first rumoured that Shopify would blanket ban all vape products from its platform in an article from Reuters on 23rd June 2026.
Annoyingly, there isn’t a public announcement from Shopify itself, no migration timeline or anything published. There’s a Shopify community post here, where discussions are ongoing. Reportedly, Shopify have contacted some USA retailers directly about the ban.
As a Shopify Select Partner Agency, we at Siruss reached out directly to our account manager, and even the direct replies from them are non-committal at this time. They effectively said they can’t comment on this issue and linked us to the current Acceptable Use policy.
Does the Shopify vape ban apply in the UK?
This is currently unclear, as Shopify have only reached out to US retailers at this time. However, the rumours are that it will be a blanket ban across the whole of Shopify globally, according to the latest article from Reuters on the matter.
What should UK vape retailers do now?
While it is currently unclear if this ban is coming to Shopify retailers across the pond, it will be silly not to prepare for the worst. Some retailers in the US only received 5 days' notice for their migration… But here’s what you can do to get ready:
1. Check your Shopify account
Review any emails from Shopify or any admin notifications in the backend of your store. It’s important to keep an eye out for any messages regarding this. Make a note of any record or deadline.
2. Export and protect your data
It’s a good idea to create regular backups of:
- Your product data and all product variants
- Collections and content
- All other content, such as blog posts, etc
- Customer records
- Orders
- Loyalty, discount pricing rules, etc.
You can export all of this information using a Shopify App such as Matrixify. This allows you to create custom exports of all of your information.
3. Audit connected systems
Make a note of everything connected to your Shopify vape store:
- Payment processing
- Age verification
- Stock and warehouse systems, EPOS or ERP software
- Accounting
- Shipping and fulfilment
- Email marketing
- Loyalty and subscriptions
4. Plan a controlled migration
Make a note of everything that you need to preserve, and create a sort of migration plan for yourself, which can be shared with a web agency if required:
- All backed-up data from above
- Make a note of your search engine rankings and traffic data – look at Google Search Console if you have this set up for your site.
- A list of functionality and connected systems
5. Reach out to a website migration partner
Make contact with a trusted ecommerce partner that can help you plan your migration. Explain the situation. Good agencies with their finger on the pulse will very likely be aware of this evolving story. They can make platform recommendations based on your requirements and unique circumstances.
Why consider WooCommerce for a vape store?
WooCommerce is likely the best and most cost-effective solution for your new vape store, because:
1. You have greater ownership and control
WordPress with WooCommerce is an open-source ecommerce platform which is self-hosted. You own the website, its source code and tech stack. This means you have less reliance on who hosts the site, and nobody tells you how to manage your store although you do have to maintain and upgrade it yourself, or via your web design agency.
WordPress is also the web’s most popular Content Management System (CMS). So it’s very easy to find developers who can work on the platform.
2. More flexibility around payment providers
There are many payment providers that are compatible with WooCommerce. This gives you flexibility on who you can use. You can check out the official payment processors list here, but even if a payment provider isn’t listed, it’s very likely that they have integration with WooCommerce. For example, Lloyds Cardnet, SagePay, etc.
3. Back-office software integration
WooCommerce is incredibly flexible when it comes to integrating external software, and integrations are much wider than the Shopify ecosystem. The following integrations are common:
- ERP and stock-management software
- EPOS systems
- Warehousing and fulfilment
- Accounting platforms
- Customer-service tools
- Supplier feeds
- Multi-location inventory
- Age verification
4. Vape-specific functionality
WooCommerce has a lot of options for common vape shop promotions such as:
- Mix and match e-liquid promotions
- Quantity pricing
- Product bundles
- Wholesale pricing
- Loyalty pricing and discounts
- Subscription or repeat order
If the base WooCommerce installation doesn’t have what you need, there are countless plugins that can absolutely add the functionality that you need. For example, the common external age verification providers in the UK, such as AgeChecked and 1account, have WordPress plugins.

Shopify to WooCommerce migration without losing SEO
Vaping retailers are incredibly restricted in the ways that they can advertise in the UK. Therefore, we understand that your SEO is incredibly important to your store.
As with any platform migration, there is a risk of ranking fluctuation, regardless of how “right” you get it.
We have performed many platform migrations, and the pattern we typically see is: some fluctuation of rankings over the space of a few weeks as Google figures out your new website structure, drops your old structure and indexes and ranks your new site. Then a return to normal, or even a marked increase in rankings, impressions and traffic over time.
With WooCommerce, there are definitely very specific steps you need to take over and above Shopify. Ultimately, the customisations on WooCommerce actually make your store much better for SEO in the long run.
The following SEO actions are recommended:
- Siruss will provide Rank Math SEO Pro for FREE on every migration to WooCommerce
- Set up Rank Math SEO defaults for each post type, schema, etc.
- A review of your URL structure – WooCommerce gives you greater flexibility with this – you’re no longer stuck to the /collections and /product structures, and you can now create proper URL silos that assist SEO.
- Migration of existing meta data to all products, categories, blog posts, etc.
- Mapping and implementing redirects – this essential step is what passes on your existing SEO authority
- Error checking for broken or historical links in the site.
- Submission to search engines
